ST. PAULS, N.C. (WBTW) — A suspect involved in a shooting with Robeson County authorities was found dead after a standoff, Sheriff Burnis Wilkins' office said Thursday.

Robeson County deputies, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Hope Mills police officers, ATF, and DEA agents, and US Marshals conducted a search warrant in the 400 block of Ice Cream Drive in the St. Pauls area at about 1 p.m. Thursday, according to the sheriff's office. When they arrived, the suspect came out of the camper with a rifle and fired multiple rounds at the investigators.

The suspect, whose name was not immediately available, then fled back into the camper after investigators returned fire, the sheriff's office said. Authorities attempted to contact the people in the camper for more than an hour
