LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - While critical services like the Transportation Security Administration and Social Security are still in operation under the ongoing government shutdown, some benefits are on the verge of running dry.

Roughly 6.7 million Americans rely on a program called WIC to get healthy food and access to healthcare services for their families.

It’s part of the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, and the longer the shutdown lasts, the closer it comes to running out of funds.

The agency said it can operate for a week or two with federal funding it has in reserve, but past that point, it could mean limited access to food and baby formula for low-income families.
