NEW YORK — No matter how things played out on Thursday night, win or lose the story of the 2025 Red Sox season is always going to be defined as much by who wasn’t on the field in Game 3 as who was.

When Boston’s journey began back in the spring, the Red Sox had Rafael Devers and Triston Casas penciled into the middle of the order as the club’s primary power threats. By mid-June, both were gone.

Throughout the spring much of the discourse surrounded the club’s “Big Three” prospects: Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell. All three made their debut, but whether due to injury or underperformance, none remained on the roster by the time the playoffs began.
