ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The U.S. government entered its second official day of shutdown on Thursday, with senators set to return to the Capitol on Friday for a vote to reopen it and fund the government short-term.

For Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control workers who woke up on furlough, it was an uncomfortable – if not familiar – place to be for many who were already laid off once earlier in the year only to be recalled back to the office.

“It feels like a continuation of the cruelty that federal employees are being subjected to, not just people at CDC but overall,” said one furloughed CDC worker who spoke to Atlanta News First anonymously over fear of retaliation. “If it stretches out beyond a week, then I worry about how am I going to pay my mortgage?
