TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNW) – Black Hills Corporation and three of its subsidiaries will pay $325,000 to settle claims of violating the Kansas Consumer Protection Act, according to Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach.

The settlement stems from an investigation revealing that Black Hills Energy shared consumers' sensitive data with third parties without their knowledge or consent. The company also misrepresented its privacy policy to consumers.

“Kansans deserve clear, honest marketing and strong protections,” Assistant Attorney General Nicholas Smith said in a statement. “Our team will always step up to protect Kansans anytime a supplier shares consumers’ data beyond their expectations,” Smith said.

The agreement sets clear limits on data sharing and ensures transparent disclosures.
