(KRON) -- The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) announced significant changes, including the closure of Academy High School and the opening of a new elementary school in Mission Bay next fall.

Academy High School -- a hybrid institution combining classroom learning, City College of San Francisco classes, and internships -- will close at the end of this school year.

Meanwhile, SFUSD will open Mission Bay Elementary School, funded by a voter-approved bond from 2016, marking the first elementary school in the Mission Bay neighborhood.

"In addition to being a money saver, Wallenberg students would have access to this hybrid type of education and Academy students at Wallenberg will have a greater mix of classes," said SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Maria Su.
