The Red Sox season came to a fitting close on Thursday.

The team that led the league in errors failed their rookie starter in the do-or-die Game 3 of the American League Wild Card series as the Yankees advanced to the ALDS to take on the Toronto Blue Jays in their 4-0 win over the Sox .

Twenty-three-year-old Connelly Early was incredibly impressive in his fifth big league start, however, the Red Sox defensive implosion in the fourth inning is the reason — outside of a historic performance by Cam Schlittler — they’ve been sent home packing.

Early was through three scoreless in effortless fashion before Cody Bellinger led off with a bloop to right-center. Neither Ceddane Rafaela nor Wilyer Abreu was able to get there as it fell for a leadoff “double.” And then, the wheels fell off.
