Chandigarh has achieved a historic milestone, becoming India’s first slum-free city. The declaration followed the demolition of Shahpur Colony, the city’s last slum. This marked the end of a twelve-year effort by the local administration to clear slums and reclaim valuable public land.
In total, over 520 acres have reportedly been recovered, providing the city with more room for growth and improved planning. According to The Indian Express, Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav confirmed that the demolition of Shahpur Colony added another five acres to the reclaimed land. “The demolition of Shahpur Colony marks a significant milestone for Chandigarh," he said.
