A senior prison officer cried in the dock as she was sentenced over a relationship with an inmate, during which the pair communicated using a smuggled phone.

Amie Turner, from Bolton , started working in HMP Manchester in 2014. On Wednesday (October 1), Manchester Crown Court heard how she was promoted to Band 4 senior officer in 2023.

But during that year, the 34-year-old made dozens of secret calls and texts to a prisoner.

Prosecuting, Louise Kitchin said phone records showed Turner's number had been in 'sustained contact' with the illicit phone between November and December of that year.

The court heard she made 16 and received 28 calls, totalling nearly four hours of conversation. There were also 29 text messages sent and 73 received.
