Emily Blunt has described her third collaboration with Dwayne Johnson as "the last great American mob story". The Devil Wears Prada actress first teamed up with the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle star for 2021's Jungle Cruise, and they are currently promoting their second collaboration, the sports biopic The Smashing Machine. The friends and frequent co-stars wasted no time in setting up their next joint effort, and pitched an idea for a Hawaii-set mob story to Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio in February. The project is currently being written. Divulging more details about the film, Blunt told Deadline, "We're developing it right now. It's a really astonishing story. It's the last great American mob story, and I can't believe it hasn't been told yet. It's a terribly exciting role for (Johnson) to kind of dig into. So, it's being written, we're working on it. And that's the wonderful part, is building it." Johnson will play a ruthless Hawaiian crime boss who has to battle encroaching rivals for control of organised crime in Hawaii. The character is based on Wilford 'Nappy' Pulawa, who led The Company, the largest organised crime syndicate on the islands in the 1970s, and had a reputation for brutality and murder. Scorsese, who is well known for his gangster films, is slated to direct the feature as well as produce alongside DiCaprio, Blunt and Johnson. DiCaprio, who has worked with Scorsese several times, is attached to star in the film alongside the Jungle Cruise actors. It is not clear what roles DiCaprio and Blunt will play.
