SAN GABRIEL – Schurr showed why it’s the defending Almont League champions during Thursday’s league opener against undefeated San Gabriel.
Schurr had played a tough schedule, had dropped a few games, but the comforts of league were on full display as it overcame a slow start to rout San Gabriel on the road, 55-14.
Spartans running back Mateo Carrasco rushed for 235 yards and a touchdown, and Tyler Higashi wasn’t shabby either, rushing for three touchdowns.
“Their running back coach calls them Sonic and Knuckles,” Schurr coach Austin Montoya said of Carrasco and Higashi. “They’re a two-headed monster man. One runs super hard while the other has speed and elusiveness. They’re a nice balance.”
