Drivers have been told a long-standing Highway Code rule should change from Friday as Storm Amy hits. Storm Amy is set to hit from 5pm on Friday with an amber alert in place from the Met Office, with towns and cities battered.
Dick Lovett’s analysis of Department for Transport data reveals that one in four drivers (25%) already fail to leave even the Highway Code’s two-second gap for dry weather.
In the rain, stopping distances should be at least double, meaning drivers who don’t increase their gap are at serious risk of collisions. Highway Code rules show the stopping distance at 20mph is 12 metres, 30mph is 14m, 40mph is 24m and 50mph is 38m.
