TEMECULA — A lesson from last year carried over for Valley View football coach Eric Martinez, and his current squad is responding to it.

“I told the kids last year, ‘You want to make a deep run in the playoffs, but you haven’t won two in a row,’” he recalled.

Thursday night, Valley View answered the challenge, winning its second consecutive game this season by defeating the defending Sunbelt League champion Rancho Christian 20-12 to open league play.

“This is our playoff run right now,” Martinez said after Valley View controlled the ball and the clock to improve to 3-3 overall. “We did what we had to do today to get it done.”

Valley View will try to make it three in a row next week at Arlington.
