A former apprentice mechanic has fronted court for allegedly trying to smuggle $20 million worth of cocaine into South Australia .

Zach Lenard Cuso, 29, from Holden Hill, was arrested in July after Australian Federal Police raided a business in Magill, uncovering what they allege was a sophisticated smuggling operation.

Australian Border Force officers flagged a suspicious shipment at Sydney ’s container examination facility in February.

The consignment, bound for Adelaide , contained a mechanical wheel-balancing machine.

Police allege hidden inside the machine were 62 tightly packed bricks of white powder, each weighing around a kilo.

Presumptive tests allegedly confirmed the powder was cocaine.

The AFP seized the haul and launched a full-scale investigation.
