Taylor Swift's fans are convinced that her new song Actually Romantic is a diss track aimed at Charli XCX. On her 2024 album Brat, the 360 hitmaker sang about feeling insecure and inferior around a female singer and not wanting to see her backstage at The 1975's shows on the track Sympathy Is a Knife. This led fans to identify Taylor as she briefly dated the band's frontman, Matty Healy, while Charli is married to his bandmate George Daniel. The pop superstar released her latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, on Friday, and her song Actually Romantic quickly received the most attention online because she takes aim at an unidentified celebrity. "I heard you call me 'Boring Barbie' when the coke's got you brave/ High-fived my ex and then you said you're glad he ghosted me/ Wrote me a song saying it makes you sick to see my face," reads the lyrics to the opening verse. In the chorus, Taylor sings that she's not "offended" by the comments because she thinks it's "actually sweet" and "actually romantic" that the person has been spending so much time, attention and effort on her. In the second verse, the Shake It Off star likens her rival to a "toy chihuahua barking at me from a tiny purse" and sings, "How many times has your boyfriend said 'Why are we always talking 'bout her?'" While unconfirmed, listeners swiftly perceived Actually Romantic to be a response to Sympathy Is a Knife, thanks to the pointed lyrics as well as the fact that Charli has sung about drug use before and has a song on her album called Everything Is Romantic. Charli has never confirmed that her track is about Taylor and has reprimanded her fans for criticising the star online or at her shows. "It is the opposite of what I want and it disturbs me that anyone would think there is room for this in this community. I will not tolerate it," she wrote on social media last year. Taylor subsequently dispelled feud rumours by praising Charli's "melodic sensibilities" and "surreal and inventive" writing in an interview with New York Magazine, adding, "I love to see hard work like that pay off."
