STATEWIDE – Mississippi ranks as one of the most dangerous states in the country for workplace injuries, according to a new analysis of federal data.
A report by RTR Law, which examined Occupational Safety and Health Administration records across 282 U.S. cities and all 50 states, found Mississippi had 11.61 severe injuries per 100,000 workers in 2024. That rate is 113% higher than the national average of 5.45 per 100,000 workers.
The study placed Mississippi eighth nationwide for workplace hazards, with 147 documented cases of serious on-the-job injuries among the state’s 1.26 million workers last year.
By comparison, Indiana recorded the nation’s lowest rate at 0.087 per 100,000 workers — a difference of 133 times between the safest and most dangerous states.
