Week 6 of the college football season gets in full swing on Friday night when New Mexico visits San Jose State in the Mountain West opener for both teams.

The Lobos come into Friday on a three-game winning streak after dropping their first game to Michigan. The Lobos own a win over UCLA and have scored at least 32 points in each of their three wins. Jack Layne has been good at quarterback, throwing for 818 yards and seven touchdowns. His top target has been tight end Dorian Thomas, who has caught 24 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns.

The Spartans come into Friday 1-3 on the season, but two of their losses have come against Power Four opponents. They lost by 31 to Texas and last week gave up a late touchdown to lose to Stanford 20-19. Their other loss came at the hands of Central Michigan. They have not beaten a Football Bowl Subdivision team this season.

San Jose State vs. New Mexico prediction, pick:

Both of these teams have had a tough nonconference schedule, but the Lobos are the ones who proved they could pull off an upset. Coach Jason Eck already has made a difference at New Mexico, and the Lobos are hoping it will equate to success in the Mountain West. The Spartans have had trouble scoring this season and that will not change on Friday. The Lobos are the slight underdog, but they will come out with the upset win and win their fourth straight game.
