A person driving a stolen ambulance ran through a stoplight at a busy Slidell intersection Thursday night and crashed into another vehicle, Slidell police said.

The ambulance had been stolen earlier in New Orleans, police said. A suspect was taken into custody, Slidell police said.

The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. at Gause Boulevard and Pearl Acres as Slidell police assisted Louisiana State Police and St. Tammany Sheriff's Office, who were trying to stop the stolen ambulance.

The ambulance was unoccupied and was reported stolen in the 5900 block of Read Boulevard in New Orleans around 9:15 p.m.

Slidell police said spike strips were deployed on the roadway to slow the ambulance.

The person driving it ran through a red light before the crash, police said.
