Baltimore City Councilman Mark Conway has filed paperwork to run for Congress, challenging Rep. Kweisi Mfume for Maryland’s 7th Congressional District.

Mfume has served eight terms and held the 7th district seat from 1987 to 1996. He returned in 2020 following the 2019 death of Rep. Elijah Cummings.

“The mounting cost of politics as usual, especially in the face of growing threats to Baltimore’s future, has weighed heavily on Councilman Conway,” a spokesperson for Conway told WBAL-TV 11. “He is consulting with residents and community leaders as he carefully considers all paths forward to best serve the people of Baltimore.”

The 7th district encompasses most of Baltimore City. It also includes some of Baltimore County.
