PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — R.I. Attorney General Peter Neronha announced Friday he won't run for governor in 2026, narrowing the list of potential candidates who may challenge incumbent Dan McKee in the Democratic primary.

"Eight years ago today, I took my first step into politics by asking my fellow Rhode Islanders for their vote for attorney general," Neronha said in a statement. "Today, I share the news that I will step away from politics at the end of my second term next year."

Neronha noted that the role of attorney general is the only elected office he's ever been interested in pursuing.
