Small, remote Burns in vast southeastern Oregon is in a position to be ignored. Yet, the dot on the map surrounded by ranches, draws in road trippers coming and going year round.

Often, national park tourists winding their way between southern Oregon’s Crater Lake and Yellowstone in Wyoming, stop halfway in Burns.

Other travelers zip over from Bend, traversing the U.S. 20 East for two hours. Boise is a three-hour drive and it’s a sometimes scenic five-hour drive from either the Portland area or Ashland.

Nearby nature attractions include Steens Mountain , Alvord Desert and the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge .

Once here, however, many travelers find that Burns, named after Scottish poet Robert Burns, is a worthy destination on its own.
