GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - Due to the government shutdown, Ship Island is experiencing changes, as it is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, a designated national park.

All park facilities, including Fort Massachusetts, are closed.

Captain William Buckley with Ship Island Excursions said that people will still be able to visit the island, but there will be some changes.

“They won’t have any restrooms on the south side, and we won’t have our snack bar on the south side. The generators will be turned off,” Buckley said.

“The park service handles operation of the generators and facilities, we’re just contracted with the park service to do the food sales, the beach rentals, and to carry people back and forth to the island. But people will still be able to go out and enjoy one of
