VAN, W.Va. — A Boone County man is charged with striking a pedestrian with his vehicle and then leaving the scene.

Calvin Buckner, 49, of Van, was arrested Thursday after police received a tip about damage to his vehicle.

A teenager was on the side of Route 85 near Van Community Park when he’s was hit by the vehicle. State police said the victim suffered serious injuries and is hospitalized.

Buckner told troopers he thought he hit a bird flying across the highway.
