ATLANTIC CITY — City beaches are open, but officials are urging people not to go in the water due to dangerous surf conditions from Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda, police said.

All guarded beaches are shut down for the season and all lifeguards are off duty, police said. Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-80s this weekend, leading to a potential surge in beachgoers.

“The beaches are unguarded and these current conditions are dangerous,” Beach Patrol Chief Steve Downey said. “We encourage folks to enjoy the beach but ask that they stay out of the water.”

The two hurricanes created severe rip currents and large waves not commonly seen in the area, police said.
