Ricky Lanier was recruited to the University of North Carolina as a quarterback out of Williamston, North Carolina, but in an era when Black quarterbacks didn't get a chance to display their talents at the position, there was talk that he would be shifted to wide receiver for the late coach Bill Dooley.

As teammate Ike Oglesby recalls, Lanier didn't like the idea and expressed his displeasure in what might have been a bold move at the time.

"The staff realized Ricky, being a phenomenal athlete, they really wanted to switch him to receiver," Oglesby said on Friday. "Ricky didn't like it at first, and because of that, he decided he was not going to come to practice for two days. And then after two days, he came back and he didn't suffer any punishment.
