Ricky Lanier was recruited to the University of North Carolina as a quarterback out of Williamston, North Carolina, but in an era when Black quarterbacks didn't get a chance to display their talents at the position, there was talk that he would be shifted to wide receiver for the late coach Bill Dooley.
As teammate Ike Oglesby recalls, Lanier didn't like the idea and expressed his displeasure in what might have been a bold move at the time.
