PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence councilors approved a citywide ban on gas-powered leaf blowers Thursday in its first of two votes on the proposal.

The ordinance, introduced by Councilor Sue AnderBois, says the ban would begin in 2028 and take affect by 2033.

"This ordinance is a common-sense commitment to keeping our air clean, clear, and safe for all – while also addressing a loud and disruptive public nuisance," AnderBois said. "I am also grateful to the many landscapers who met with me and helped me amend this to mitigate effects on our small business owners."
