Gein died at age 77 on July 26, 1984. His cause of death was respiratory failure related to lung cancer. After a judge ordered Gein committed to Central State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in 1968, he spent the rest of his life in a mental hospital. He died at the Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison, Wisconsin.
Gein was arrested in 1957 shortly after the disappearance of Bernice Worden, one of his two confirmed murder victims. Police found Worden’s decapitated body on Gein’s property.
