RALEIGH, N.C. (WBTV) - House Bill 307, also known as “Iryna’s Law,” was signed into law on Friday by North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein more than one month after the deadly Charlotte light rail stabbing .

Gov. Stein signed the bill into law on Friday, Oct. 3, more than a week after it was passed by the House -- but not without criticisms.

Stein announced the bill signing in a video published to the governor’s official website and social media pages. It’s named for Iryna Zarutska, the young woman who was stabbed to death on a Charlotte light rail .

“Our hearts ache for the family of Iryna Zarutska and the three people who were killed in Southport. And we all pray for those injured to heal,” he said. The 23-year-old victim had come to the United States to escape the war in Ukraine.
