SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Prepare for morning showers and a few lightning strikes in the northern valley as the center of the storm system treks through the region.

Temperatures will continue to cool today, with valley highs topping out in the low 70s. Afternoon temperatures will peak in the low 60s in the foothills, with Sierra highs around 50 degrees.

Light to moderate showers moving in from the north carry a slight chance of thunder and lightning. As the system shifts east, showers will sweep through the Sacramento area before climbing into the foothills and then the Sierra.

By early afternoon, the valley should be dry, with thunderstorms lingering over higher terrain. As those storms drop into the Great Basin, the region turns drier. Skies will clear first in the valley, setting up a su
