WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — The driver who hit a 5-year-old boy in a Warwick neighborhood Thursday afternoon is not facing charges, with police calling it an "unfortunate accident."

The child was struck on Boylston Street around 3 p.m. and taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital with serious injuries. As of Friday, the boy was still recovering at the hospital.

Police initially released a photo of the suspect vehicle after it was no longer on scene. Investigators later identified the driver as an off-duty employee of the Rhode Island State Police.

According to police, the driver was "extremely distraught" after he was notified about the crash. The vehicle was towed and is being held as the investigation continues. Police said the driver was "interviewed at length" and released without charges.
