CITYWIDE— NEW YORK CITY will, for the first time, proactively offer to buy homes in flood-prone neighborhoods, starting with “ The Hole, ” a below-sea-level area on the edge of East New York plagued by swampy flooding, failing septic tanks and poor infrastructure, according to THE CITY. The Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice launched the Resilient Acquisitions program on Friday, inviting residents to signal interest in selling properties. Officials said purchased land could be converted into stormwater infrastructure, parks or resilient housing.
Homeowners welcomed potential relief, though they told THE CITY that fair compensation is essential. The initiative could expand to other flood-vulnerable communities.
