From the first irrigation ditches that drew settlers to the land along the Yellowstone River to the reservoirs being built near its banks today, water remains the lifeblood of Billings progress.
To stay ahead of future growth, Billings is tackling the largest public works project in its history. The $150 million investment in water system upgrades includes a $68 million treatment plant and two reservoirs on the West End .
The city expects the improvements to save money, increase reserve capacity in case of emergencies and provide a safe, reliable water supply for generations to come.
Because many surrounding areas also rely on Billings for water, the system currently serves about 400,000 people, roughly three times the city’s population.
