FRIES, Va. (WDBJ) - Lora Evans and her family have been visiting Fries for 10 years, finding comfort in the quiet peace and New River at a campground by South Carrico Street.

After frequenting for so long, Evans purchased her first home on the property in March 2024.

“Originally, we were only going to do some cosmetic things, paint, new flooring, things like that,” said Evans. “We had just finished hanging shoot rock the week of Helene.”

Those plans quickly changed. Evans was at her primary home in Jonesville, North Carolina when panicked calls from neighbors started coming in on September 27th, 2024.

Fries was going underwater.
