CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Could the National Guard come to Charlotte, and do city leaders think it’s needed?

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police posted a letter to social media on Friday that they sent to city leaders, Governor Josh Stein, and even President Donald Trump, asking for the National Guard to be deployed to Charlotte.

Right now, council members on both sides of the aisle believe the National Guard is not needed. Instead, they want the focus to be on staffing public transit and the city with more police officers.

“We have been working with the White House, our federal officers and assistance in all of this that we want to do. We definitely want to be sure that we are taking the right steps forward,” said Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles.
