Purdue coach Matt Painter received the alumni association's Distinguished Alumni Award for Meritorious Service.

The award was last given in 1999 to astronauts Neil Armstrong and Eugene Cernan. Painter is only the 31st honoree since 1946.

WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue men's basketball coach Matt Painter, the first coach to take the Boilermakers to a Final Four in 44 years, recently joined another exclusive club.

Following Friday's practice, alumni association representatives presented Painter with the Purdue Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumni Award for Meritorious Service. He becomes the 31st person to receive the award since it was created in 1946.

The last previous honorees came 26 years ago, when Apollo astronauts Neil Armstrong and Eugene Cernan were recognized in 1999.
