JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is ordering a cleanup of toxic and potentially cancer-causing materials at a former power plant in Johnson City.
The former Goudey Power Station is contaminated with asbestos which presents a potential risk to public workers who access the site along with nearby residents.
The 33-acre property located on the Susquehanna River was a coal-fired plant from 1917 until 2011 and when it closed, unsafe demolition activities left the property in dangerous condition. EPA finalized an agreement with NRGY Development to clean the contamination and pay EPA's future oversight costs to hold them accountable.
Under EPA oversight, NRGY will enhance existing security measures at the property and remove friable asbestos which can g
