ATLANTA — The federal government remains shut down after lawmakers failed to pass a new spending bill before the midnight deadline Tuesday night.

Negotiations are ongoing, but divisions between Republicans and Democrats seem to show little sign of easing.

Democrats are pushing for increased healthcare funding and an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies — efforts aimed at reversing cuts made over the summer in what President Donald Trump dubbed the Big Beautiful Bill.

Republicans argue Democrats are holding the government hostage over a separate policy issue.
