The conditions for the middle race of the Hog Island season turned out better than originally forecasted, but required some patience. Until an hour or so before race time, the water in the harbor was glassy and all the flags hung limply on their poles. The tide was flooding and sunshine on its way but it was impossible to set a course when there was literally no wind. The turbine was pointing to the northeast when it stopped turning completely. Finally, however, a small breeze filled in from the east, then southeast and finally settled in just west of south. Accordingly, the windward mark was set deep in South Cove and the start and the leeward mark in Oldfield Cove. The fleet would travel back and forth between these twice before finishing in the middle off Plunkett’s Point.
