The Louisiana National Guard met with New Orleans and state police officials on Friday to prepare for the possible deployment of guardsmen to the city , the Louisiana National Guard said in a statement.

The meeting occurred four days after Gov. Jeff Landry announced he had asked the federal government to pay to send 1,000 troops to cities across the state .

As of Friday, President Donald J. Trump’s administration had yet to approve Landry’s request, according to the statement.

The Louisiana National Guard said Maj. Gen. Thomas Friloux, who heads the force, met with New Orleans Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick and the Louisiana State Police superintendent, Col. Robert Hodges, to “conduct preliminary contingency planning to improve public safety.”
