The suspect accused of a deadly New Years Eve hit-and-run in 2020 attended a hearing with his attorney Friday to request his case be transferred to Drug Court.

Troy McAlister is accused of running a red light on New Years Eve, hitting Hakano Abe and Elizabeth Platt in a crosswalk in the south of the Market District in San Francisco. Both women were killed in the crash.

McAlister was charged with multiple felonies, including vehicular manslaughter and DUI.

On Friday's hearing, McAlister's attorney, Scott Grant, requested his client's case be moved to the city's Drug Court, which is described as an intensive rehabilitation program.

The request brought many activists, who gathered outside of San Francisco's Hall of Justice to oppose it.
