GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Thousands will lines the streets of downtown Grand Island on Saturday for the 83rd Harvest of Harmony parade.
The first parade took place on Thursday, Oct. 20, 1938 as the Central Nebraska Music Festival led by the Mayor and Chief of Police.
The parade featured floats from 14 rural Hall County schools, the National Guard and performances from eight high school bands.
The first eight bands were Grand Island Senior High, Ravenna, Gibbon, Scotia, Central City, St. Paul, Broken Bow and North Loup.
That first year, an Omaha WPA band comprised of black musicians was also featured, and they performed at a concert after the parade.
The Hall County Historical Society says that first year saw an attendance of between 5,000 to 8,000 people.
