The Supreme Court returns Monday to begin hearing cases for the 2025-2026 term.

One of the biggest cases on the docket is whether President Donald Trump has the legal authority to issue sweeping tariffs on hundreds of countries.

“We're standing up for the American worker, and we are finally putting America first,” Trump said during his self-described “Liberation Day” tariff announcement back in April, during which he called chronic trade deficits "a national emergency that threatens our security and our very way of life."

"It's a very great threat to our country. And for these reasons, starting tomorrow, the United States will implement reciprocal tariffs on other nations,“ the president said at the time.
