ROYAL OAK – The Royal Oak Shrine Knights used a balanced attack to defeat Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes 28-14 Friday night.
The first half was mostly fought in the trenches as each side was largely content to play smashmouth football and run the ball. For almost the entire first half, both Shrine and Lakes could move the ball but not finish any of their drives with points – the Lakers got as close as inside the 10-yard line before being topped on fourth-and-2 late in the opening quarter. Finally, Shrine took the lead with 13.7 seconds to play before halftime on a trick play with receiver Caydin Barbato throwing a touchdown pass to Grant Poulton near the right edge of the endzone.
