History shook hands with the future on Friday night at New Castle’s Taggart Stadium.

Just prior to the Class 4A Parkway Conference bout between New Castle and Montour, the Red Hurricanes inducted the inaugural class into their Hall of Fame. Members from some of those 11 WPIAL championships — tied for the third most in league history — stood at midfield and waved as they soaked in the applause.

For this modern-day New Castle team, the presence of legacy offered a unique opportunity. The Red Hurricanes hadn’t beaten Montour since 2021. In the past four years, they’ve won a grand total of four conference games.

On a night New Castle could use a Dan Marino-esque performance from its quarterback, it got a pretty stellar one from the freshman named Marino.
