The tackle on fourth down wasn’t enough. Carter Dahlke wanted to put the game away early.
The Gallatin High senior had just forced a turnover on downs by tackling Great Falls High running back Mason Cannon for a loss at the Raptors’ 3-yard line. After the change of possession, Dahlke took the handoff and raced 97 yards for a touchdown — a 14-point swing in the blink of an eye right before halftime.
It was an early decisive blow in Gallatin’s 42-0 victory Friday evening against the Bison at Van Winkle Stadium.
If Cannon had run to the right, Dahlke might have overrun the play and missed his chance at the play. Instead, Cannon ran left and Dahlke, who was blitzing from the right, met him in the backfield.
