Drivers are being warned to take extra care on the roads this long weekend as double demerits come into force in several states.
Double demerit points will be in place from Friday through to Monday inclusive across NSW and the ACT for the Labour Day long weekend.
During this period, motorists who speed, use mobile phones illegally, or fail to wear a seatbelt will face the tougher penalty against their licence.
Riders caught without a motorcycle helmet will also be penalised.
“Drivers caught using their phones during a double demerit period will be hit with a $410 fine ($544 in a school zone) and 10 demerits,” the National Roads and Motorists’ Association (NRMA) said.
