The ability to take and process recycling in Grand Junction has a history dating back to the late 1980s, but a new commitment from the city, a large state grant and a law taking effect this year are set to greatly expand the city’s and the region’s ability to process recycled material.
In 1989, Curbside Recycling Indefinitely launched a pilot program to establish a curbside recycling service in Grand Junction and by 1992, the city signed on in a public-private partnership with the company. For the next 30 years, the partnership offered multi-stream recycling with curbside pick-up. Its drop-off site opened a few years later in 1996, which still sees more than 300 drop-offs a day.
