DOWNEY — The St. Francis football team welcomed the highly anticipated return of their star quarterback Shawn Sanders in its Angelus League opener against St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy on Friday night.

However, Sanders’ return to action was spoiled as PMA intercepted the Golden Knights’ quarterback five times to take down St. Francis 42-15.

Sanders finished his night with over 130 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

St. Francis coach Dean Herrington believes that his quarterback will have better days in front of him as the season progresses.

“Four of the interceptions weren’t his fault at all. He’s gonna be good,” Herrington said. “It’s tough. It’s tough. This was his first game, but he did a lot of really, really good things, and we’re gonna get better.”
