Jockey Kerrin McEvoy thought “wait a minute” when Autumn Glow was slow to respond at the top of the straight in the Epsom Handicap on Saturday at Randwick.
After losing a shoe in the $1.5 million mile at Randwick, the unbeaten four-year-old looked in trouble after making a long run to sit outside leader Fully Lit from the outside gate.
But there was no need to worry. The Chris Waller-trained $1.70 favourite (Sportsbet) lifted to score a one-and-a-half-length victory over Fully Lit and extend her record to seven from seven, now with a first group 1.
“She threw a shoe, so I’m not sure if that was part of the reason, but she changed onto her fresh leg as we straightened up and then away she went at the top of the rise,” McEvoy said.
