Monroe County athletes teed off against top competition and came back with a collection of medals from the Michigan Special Olympics State Golf Tournament, according to a community announcement.

Twenty-eight golfers competed in Unified Golf, a format where a Special Olympian is paired with a non-handicapped partner in an alternate shot format. The tournament was held at Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti on Sept. 26 and wrapped up with lunch and an awards ceremony.

Gold, silver and bronze for local teams

Four Monroe County teams earned gold medals in their divisions: Janice Kraus and Kevin Hemry, Lindsey Longmuir and Gary Longmuir, Mary Dykstra and Tom Labeau, and Cody Fairchild and Chad Fairchild.
